JAVELIN THROW WORLD RECORD BY ARMY MEN NEERAJ CHOPRA : COMMANDER P S

Pune 24 July (UNI) : Indian Army Men Naib Subedar Neeraj Chopra smashed
world record under the age group of 20 years in the Javelin throw in the
IAAF under 20 championship at Poland said the Army Sports Institute
Commander Mr P S Chima here this evening.
Chima while speaking exclusively with UNI correspondent said that
Naib Subedar Neeraj Chopra of army smashed Javelin record by throwing
86.48Mtrs in IAAF World U20 Championship at Bydgoszcz ,Poland on 23
july, his mark added nearly two meters to the previous record of 84.69m,
set in 2011 by recently crowned European champion Zigismunds Sirmais of
Latvia, it also smashed his own senior Indian record. Johan Grobler of
South Africa and Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second and third on
the podium by throwing 80.59Mtr and 79.65 Mtrs respectively said Chima.
Chima further added that Chopra took to the runway for his second
attempt and launched the spear way behind the furthermost white curved
line on the infield, which marked out 75 meters. It was clear that it
was beyond 80 metres, After a matter of seconds  which would have felt a
lot longer for Chopra  the figures flashed up on the scoreboard: 86.48m.
Those numbers were accompanied on the scoreboard with the words:
“world U20 record”.
Cheema  mentioned that  I contacted Neeraj’s uncle,  Mr Bhim
Chopra who informed that this is the result of the passion and
discipline of this young man who belongs to a small village Khandra near
Panipat and used to cycle to Panipat stadium to practice Javelin to
chase his dreams. Neeraj’s father owns a small land holding and always
supported his son to go for his dreams added Mr Bhim. Neeraj was
recruited in Rajputana Rifles as direct Naib Subedar under sports quota
entry.
“I was hoping to improve, but I never expected to throw over 86
metres and break the world U20 record,” said Neeraj Chopra, my
ultimate target this year was to qualify for the Olympics, but I
didn’t make it, besides this My other goal was to win at the World U20
Championships.” said Neeraj This young athlete has all the qualities
of an Olympian however was unfortunate that this performance came late
by 10 days. Athletics Federation of India has been proactively
supporting such young athletes and he has been practicing in Poland in
the run up period of this event, it was the best quality podium finish
ever in this discipline at the IAAF World U20 Championships said the
